Albuquerque from the Sandia Mountains

This is a photograph I took of Albuquerque from the Sandia Mountains on the 27th of August, 2006 while hiking with my bros Bobby and Bryan.  I’ve always liked the contrast in this picture between  the city (population some 650,000) and the Sandia Mountain Wilderness Area.  The Sandias are definitely the best, and possibly the only, thing Albuquerque has going for it.  Except for the weather.  And New Mexico.  “A greater hive of scum and villainy is not to be found in 4 parsecs…” (or something like that).

Ah, a clear day. Those can be rare. When you were in ABQ?

We hiked the La Luz trail in late August. It made me appreciate our Sandia Mountains. Sometimes when you live so close to something, you take it for granted. That big watermelon (Sandia) that gives us our near daily gorgeous sunsets and sunrises. Did you know that it was named Sandia by the Spaniards who noticed how it turns a pink/green like a watermelon? And from Albuqerque, it is shaped like a watermelon you cut lengthwise.

I lived in Albuquerque for twelve years, from 1995-2007. I only moved to Batavia, Illinois to be with my girlfriend. I loved New Mexico, the land and the climate. Not to crazy about Albuquerque itself. The La Luz trail is probably the only trail in all of the Sandias I never hiked. My favorite photo of the Sandias on my site is “Sandia Mountains” in the “Rural Routes” section. Taken at the Spain Road Trailhead, August 2006. That summer was a great monsoon year and I never saw so much grass and other plant life in the foothills! Now that we’re on the Sandia’s, I think I’ll post a photo to my “Daily Photograph” category that I took from the Ojito Wilderness Area, in March 2007, which illustrates the “watermellon” concept nicely…
